As a profession, psychology justifies its existence through the claim that it eliminates distress and improves the quality of people’s lives – and, yet, psychology, so far, mostly expects people to think and then talk about their problems in order to achieve those goals. Growing up as a cowgirl on a horse and cattle ranch, I learned the hard way that the old adage, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink” – is true. The same is true of people. You cannot eliminate distress and improve quality of life for anyone who is not willing and able….
