Episode 1: Introduction
DEDICATION
This is dedicated to all human beings on planet earth - and beyond - if there are any....
Episode 2: Chapter 1 What If...
"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." ~Jesus Christ
(The Holy Bible, King James Version, Matthew 22:37-40).
What if it is true? What if this is it? What if being the best person we can be comes down to this? Whether you believe Jesus Christ is God incarnate, or a prophet, or a wise man, or even just another person like you and me - being a pragmatic minimalist, I decided that this claim that has stood the test of time - that all humans need to flourish is to abide by these two commandments - was worthy of investigation, and worthy of becoming my life's work in an effort to make a difference in the world....
Episode 3: Chapter 2 Universal...
What could be considered versions of this claim are universal across cultures:
• Common Sense throughout time: “Treat people the way you’d like to be
treated.”
• Hinduism: 3200 BC, from the Hitopadesa: “One should always treat
others as they themselves wish to be treated.”
• Judaism: 1300 BC, from the Old Testament, Leviticus 19:18: “Thou shalt
love thy neighbor as thyself.”
• Zoroastrianism: 600 BC, from the Shastna-shayast 13:29: “Whatever is
disagreeable to yourself, do not do unto others.”
• Buddhism: 560 BC from the Udanavarga 5:18: “Hurt not others with that
which pains yourself.”
• Confucianism: 557 BC, from the Analects 15:23: “What you do not want
done to yourself, do not do to others.”
• Christianity: 30 AD, from the Bible - King James Version, Matthew
22:39, Jesus said: “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” And going even further, in John 13:33 Jesus said: “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another as I have loved you.”
• Islam: 632 AD, from the hadith Kitab al-Kafi, vol. 2, p. 146 - “As you would have people do to you, do to them; and what you dislike to be done to you, don’t do to them."
This merely brings us closer to what I have come to term the social imperative....
Episode 4: Chapter 3 ...Yet Unique
While it could be argued that cultures around the world universally make a somewhat similar statement regarding reciprocity, they don't goes as far as stating love and they don't make the claim that, in essence, love is all that human beings need to flourish as Jesus' claim does. In fact, of the reciprocity edicts I have found, only Judaism in 1300 BC in Leviticus 19:18 in the Old Testament, and Jesus quoted in 30 AD in Matthew 22:39 in the New Testament specifically state love. Yes, love requires a whole different level than treat or do....
Episode 5: Chapter 4 Three Kinds of Love
When you unpack Jesus' claim, you find three steps that include three types of love:
1) Love something bigger than yourself with all of you,
2) Love yourself,
3) Love your neighbor as you love yourself....
Episode 6: Chapter 5 Awe
How can we invoke awe? It would make sense to say that the more moments of awe we experience, the more love for awe we experience. Typing the word r-e-a-l-i-t-y contains seven moments of my reality. Reality only exists in the current moment. A previous moment has past. A future moment has not yet occurred. Just recognizing this fact allows you the space to experience awe....
Episode 7: Chapter 6 Self
How can we invoke humble, healthy self love? Make sure self is on your grateful list to start! Love and fear cannot exist in the same space at the same time - so choose love. Appreciation and fear, or disgust or guilt or shame, cannot exist in the same space at the same time - so choose appreciation. If you don't believe me, try it. I only want to put in this pragmatic, minimalist book what every human being can experience for themself. Try calling up love and fear in the same moment. Won't happen! Try being grateful and disgusted in the same moment. Nope!....
Episode 8: Chapter 7 We
How can we invoke love for our neighbor? More specifically, how can we invoke love for our neighbor that reaches both the level of our all-encompassing love in moments of awe and the resulting mirrored love for our self? Further, how can we invoke love for not just our favorite neighbor, not just our neighbor who is like us, not just our neighbor who it may profit us to love, but as Jesus clarifies for his claim in Matthew 25:40 "these the least of my brethren?" How can we invoke love for those of us who only have love to give in return?....
Episode 9: Chapter 8 Nuances
After taking all of the love steps in Jesus' claim, it is important to recognize the nuances contained within these statements as well. These nuances are vital to fully achieving our goal of peaceful flourishing for humanity. From a pragmatic minimalist perspective, I am going to highlight five nuances: personhood, unconditional love, unconditional positive regard, personal responsibility, and human equality. These five conditions are built into Jesus' claim, along with the three steps and types of love. In fact, personhood, unconditional love, unconditional positive regard, and personal responsibility are actually wrapped into human equality....
Episode 10: Chapter 9 Human Equality
Here we come full circle. We are back to addressing how ragged reciprocity has become around the edges today. We are back to Jesus claim' that love can fix it, that love is all we need to become our best selves, that love is all we need to achieve peaceful flourishing for humanity....
Episode 11: Chapter 10 The Final rEvolution
I intend The Love Rule to be our new narrative that will enable us to thrive individually and collectively. Yes, it is actually extremely old - and versions of it are universal - but I see that as strengths. A pragmatic minimalists' dream! What hasn't happened, what is new, is actually translating Jesus' statement into the tapestry of our lives in the here and now - actually evoking a new, detailed narrative for the world as we want it to be, so we can make it so....

Episode 1: Introduction
DEDICATION
To all psychologists striving towards human flourishing.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Gratitude to all of the scientists trying to decipher human beings
and the world we live in....
Episode 2: Chapter 1 The Love Rule
Mirror Psychology stands on a foundation of The Love Rule (Love, 2022c). In a brief summary, I wrote the book The Love Rule with the intent of it being the (old) new narrative we can tap into, not only for achieving peaceful flourishing on the humanity level, but also as the new narrative, from a pragmatic minimalist's perspective, for quickly and efficiently achieving secure attachments through brief psychotherapy blended with experiential therapy within our relationships with something bigger than ourselves, in relationship with ourselves, and in our love relationships, family relationships and community relationships....
Episode 3: Chapter 2 The Mirror
I am writing Mirror Psychology to position The Love Rule within psychology, providing the theoretical framework and latest relevant bio-psycho-social-spiritual research that exists to support this concept.
While mirror as a concept has been used in various ways in psychology in the past, the Mirror in Mirror Psychology becomes an important metaphor not only for the personal responsibility that is continually needed to succeed (looking in the mirror is a way of holding yourself accountable for your choices and actions and being honest with yourself), but, as depicted in The Love Rule (Love, 2022c), it is a reminder of why Jesus can make the claim that he does which the latest research confirms - that love is all we need to be the best we can be as individuals and as humanity....
Episode 4: Chapter 3 Foundations
Standing on the foundation of Jesus' claim, I am unapologetically reclaiming and reconnecting the spiritual aspect of ourselves to the bio-psycho-social aspects of ourselves in Mirror Psychology. Some psychologists will say, "of course," and some will still disagree, continuing to maintain that spirituality is the antithesis of science. It used to be that psychology was also considered the antithesis of science....
Episode 5: Chapter 4 Awe
Human beings' experience of awe is universal. The latest positive psychology research into awe finds that all human beings experience moments of awe similarly, regardless of our culture or where we live in the world (Bonner & Friedman, 2011; Keltner & Haidt, 2003; Zhang & Keltner, 2016). Explorations into awe find not only positive effects on self-concept but on sociality (Keltner & Haidt, 1999; Schurtz et al., 2000; Shiota et al., 2007). Pawar (2017) goes so far as to maintain that happiness lies with the loss of self. Piff et al. (2015) finds that awe not only creates the small (humble, grateful) self, but also enhances pro-social behavior....
Episode 6: Chapter 5 Self
We carry forward from our experience of loving something bigger than ourselves - our experience of awe - the reward of humble gratefulness as well as the positive affect that leads to subjective well-being, happiness, and success (Baumeister et al., 2003; Khatoon, 2015; Van Cappellen et al., 2016). It is here that we step further into positive psychology and the value of positive emotions in being our best selves (Csikszentmihalyi, 2009; Fredrickson, 2003; 2009; Seligman, 2006). I maintain that Jesus' claim intentionally states to love something bigger than ourselves first because in doing this we find the mirror for how to love our self - with humble gratefulness, with recognition of our unique sense of purpose, and with a fresh, tingling, renewed sense of belonging. Supporting this, Lin (2014) finds that a higher order gratitude uniquely predicts subjective well- being....
Episode 7: Chapter 6 We
The final step and type of love in Jesus' claim is to love your neighbor. This step comes after loving yourself because you first must know how to love yourself with the humbling all-encompassing love reflected in the first step in moments of awe before you can love your neighbor as you love yourself. How you love yourself provides the mirror for how to love your neighbor - and this, as with the rest of Jesus' succinct claim, is an important distinction. The kindness Petersen and Seligman (2004) found to be universal is relatively easy to achieve. This kindness is contained in the empathy, cooperation and reciprocity required to survive as human beings - and in the universal versions of Jesus' claim (Henrich & Muthukrishna, 2021; Perc et al., 2017; VanCleave, 2016). But to love your neighbor as you love yourself elevates your responsibility to a whole different level, a much higher plane....
Episode 8: Chapter 7 Nuances
In striving to do better, beyond achieving the three steps and types of love, we must step back into the normative realm of logic and critical thinking to recognize the nuances, or underlying assumptions, also contained in Jesus' claim: personhood, unconditional love, unconditional positive regard, personal responsibility, and human equality. The first four - personhood, unconditional love, unconditional positive regard, and personal responsibility - can actually be wrapped into human equality....
Episode 9: Chapter 7 Nuances - Personhood
Personhood is the recognition that each human being, regardless of stage, age, or any other differentiating factor, is always worthy of the dignity of full personhood within the human community. In logical terms, it seems odd that this statement would even need to be made. Of course a person is a person. Imagine the world we would live in if humanity accepted that as unequivocally true, and if human beings saw that humanity is not what it could be until each person had reached their full potential....
Episode 10: Chapter 7 Nuances - Unconditional Love
Unconditional Love or love without conditions attached to it - is cocooned within Jesus' stipulation that we love all of our neighbors, and that we love ourselves, with the kind of love mirrored within the all-encompassing love we experience surrounding us in moments of awe, this love that engulfs us....
Episode 11: Chapter 7 Nuances - Unconditional Positive Regard
Unconditional Positive Regard is related to unconditional love but it addresses and even celebrates our differences. It is about unconditional acceptance and respect. This, too, is a vital nuance contained in Jesus' claim. Unconditional positive regard enables us to not only accept - and even celebrate - how our neighbors are different from us, or even how we are different and unique from our neighbors, or even how we as individuals feel different from everyone else in the world - it enables us to do this around differences we perhaps do not understand, or differences some of us wanting to wield power over those we claim to love or our neighbors have traditionally selfishly attempted to use to our advantage....
Episode 12: Chapter 7 Nuances - Personal Responsibility
Personal responsibility is clearly holding yourself accountable for your own choices and your own actions. Jesus' claim specifically calls on you to take personal responsibility for making the choice, with your free will, to turn his claim into reality in your life. Do you know what else this means? Jesus is claiming that you, and only you, have the power to do this in your life, in addition to claiming that when you do, you are doing all you need to do to be the best human being you can be, on an individual and on a humanity level. Recognize this power in your life, recognize that you possess the power to make change in the world....
Episode 13: Chapter 7 Nuances - Conclusion
Langer and Rodin (1976) apply this concept and powerfully summarize all of the nuances: personhood, unconditional love, unconditional positive regard, and personal responsibility in their research with elderly in a nursing home. These individuals live in a virtually decision-free environment. In their experiment, those persons in the group who were seen in all these ways and given back responsibility for themselves, and were also given the responsibility of caring for a plant - thrived....
Episode 14: Chapter 8 Human Equality
Here we come full circle. We once again address how ragged reciprocity has become around the edges today. We revisit Jesus claim' that love can fix it, that love is truly all we need to become our best selves, that love is truly all we need to achieve peaceful flourishing for humanity....
Episode 15: Chapter 9 The Final rEvolution
Revolutions are messy - and fatal. Thought revolutions are less messy, not fatal - and much more effective. I call this the final rEvolution because, after all of my research, logic and critical thinking, I support Jesus' nearly 2000 year old claim that, as human thoughts and behaviors go - it is. Invoking The Love Rule as our new narrative in word and deed could be just - relief - enabling us to thrive individually and together in human community....
Episode 16: Chapter 10 Conclusion
At the end of the day, as a pragmatic minimalist, I agree with Einstein (1919) regarding something bigger than ourselves, that the details are irrelevant, it is the thoughts that count. Yet, I am curious what you, as a psychotherapist, would make of encountering this person Jesus - knowing nothing of him prior. I imagine this person showing up - knowing only what he speaks. He agrees to a horse ride so we climb on horses to go for a ride along the river. He starts to talk while I listen....

To all human beings striving to live their best lives - and being the change they desire.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Thank you to all the pragmatic giants on whose shoulders I stand, who believe experience combined with imagination, logic and critical thinking provide our most trustworthy truths....
Episode 2: Chapter 1 The Love Rule
Mirror Experiential Therapy, like Mirror Psychology (Love, 2022a), stands on a foundation of The Love Rule (Love, 2022b).
I wrote the book Mirror Psychology to position The Love Rule within psychology, providing the theoretical framework and latest relevant bio-psycho-social-spiritual and neuroscience research that exists to support this concept. If you would like to review all of the theory and research underlying Mirror Psychotherapy blended with Mirror Experiential Therapy, then I recommend you read Mirror Psychology (Love, 2022a). This book, Mirror Experiential Therapy, provides the pragmatic application of Mirror Psychology's theory and research....
Episode 4: Chapter 3 Case Study
My grandmother, who lived to be 99, passing 3 days before her 100th birthday, always said, "The proof is in the pudding." I never forgot this. Perhaps that is why I am a pragmatic minimalist. Solid theory is important, scientific research is important - but, in psychology, for me the results in application are what ultimately matters. Theory and research, after all, are only as good in therapy as the clients' lives they improve through application....
Episode 5: Chapter 4 Do, Feel, Then Perhaps, Talk
As a profession, psychology justifies its existence through the claim that it eliminates distress and improves the quality of people's lives - and, yet, psychology, so far, mostly expects people to think and then talk about their problems in order to achieve those goals. Growing up as a cowgirl on a horse and cattle ranch, I learned the hard way that the old adage, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink" - is true. The same is true of people. You cannot eliminate distress and improve quality of life for anyone who is not willing and able....
Episode 6: Chapter 5 Client Consult & Agreement
You're still with me - so let's dig in. Of course, prior to performing psychotherapy with anyone, it is vital from an ethical and legal standpoint to make certain you and any potential client are a good fit. I recommend providing a free 30 minute consultation to each prospective client to listen to why they are seeking your help. This is also where it is important for you to look in your own mirror and be honest with yourself about cultural fit....
Episode 7: Chapter 6 Pre-Therapy Assessment
Your new client has told you why they are seeking your help, but it is also important to complete a brief pre-therapy assessment for at least three reasons: 1) as long as you use evidence-based assessment tools, you are establishing the first step towards a gold standard research foundation for the psychotherapy you perform with your client, which helps not only your psychotherapist colleagues constantly improve, but establishes client improvement, which is what ultimately matters; 2) pre-therapy assessment may deepen your understanding of the client's baseline situation, possibly uncovering more than the client already shared, which helps you do your job more effectively; and 3) the tools recommended for use in Mirror Experiential Therapy are actually designed to provide you with an inventory of the existing bio-psycho-social-spiritual resource capital clients already have in their lives that they can tap into and that you can build upon....
Episode 8: Chapter 7 Mirror Experiential Therapy: Awe
The most important take-away from the pre-therapy assessment is the inventory of existing resource capital clients already have in their lives to tap into in the different areas addressed in Mirror Experiential Therapy. This inventory literally provides you with a roadmap of what your client has available and what you need to build upon. This will determine what you will be doing experientially with each client....
Episode 9: Chapter 8 Mirror Experiential Therapy: Self
Consider the four-wheeling canoeing journey we went on in our narrative scenario in the last chapter. Not only is this journey filled to the brim with potential awe moments, it is also busting out with opportunities to engage in healthy grateful love of self. I shared the philosophy in The Love Rule (Love, 2022b) and the theory and research in Mirror Psychology (Love, 2022a) as to why loving yourself is vital - before you can authentically love anyone else. Achieving a secure attachment with self as a resource is the second step of our mission....
Episode 10: Chapter 9 Mirror Experiential Therapy: We
We have arrived at the place where you are likely to find your client is most challenged. After all, except for mental disorders caused by genetics or biology or physical injury (which you ought to be working collaboratively with a bio-psycho- social-spiritual team of experts to address), problematic relationships with other human beings are the source of the remaining mental challenges. After achieving a higher power secure attachment resource, and achieving a secure attachment with self resource, the third, and final step of our mission is to achieve secure attachments with others....
Episode 11: Chapter 10 Post-Therapy Assessment
Because we are scientists as well as psychologists - it is important to have your client complete post-therapy assessments covering the same ground they covered in their pre-therapy assessments to complete the circle. Remember they agreed to complete both pre- and post-therapy assessments in the initial client agreement they signed. Hopefully, they also agreed to filming - make sure they receive a copy. I would also add a professional competence assessment (Taylor, 2015) and a therapeutic alliance assessment (Cahill et al., 2012) in the post-therapy assessment to clarify what you are doing well as a psychotherapist and where you could improve....

disagreeable to yourself, do not do unto others.”
Episode 9: Chapter 8 Nuances - Part 1
Episode 9: Chapter 8 Nuances - Part 2

Episode 4: Chapter 3 Foundations - Part 6
Standing on the foundation of Jesus' claim, I am unapologetically reclaiming and reconnecting the spiritual aspect of ourselves to the bio-psycho-social aspects of ourselves in Mirror Psychology. Some psychologists will say, "of course," and some will still disagree, continuing to maintain that spirituality is the antithesis of science. It used to be that psychology was also considered the antithesis of science....
Episode 5: Chapter 4 Awe - Part 1
Episode 5: Chapter 4 Awe - Part 2
Episode 6: Chapter 5 Self - Part 1
Episode 6: Chapter 5 Self - Part 2

Episode 8: Chapter 7 Nuances - Personhood - Part 4
Episode 8: Chapter 7 Nuances - Personhood - Part 5
Episode 8: Chapter 7 Nuances - Personhood - Part 6
Personhood is the recognition that each human being, regardless of stage, age, or any other differentiating factor, is always worthy of the dignity of full personhood within the human community. In logical terms, it seems odd that this statement would even need to be made. Of course a person is a person. Imagine the world we would live in if humanity accepted that as unequivocally true, and if human beings saw that humanity is not what it could be until each person had reached their full potential....
Episode 8: Chapter 7 Nuances - Unconditional Love - Part 1
Episode 8: Chapter 7 Nuances - Unconditional Love - Part 2
Unconditional Love or love without conditions attached to it - is cocooned within Jesus' stipulation that we love all of our neighbors, and that we love ourselves, with the kind of love mirrored within the all-encompassing love we experience surrounding us in moments of awe, this love that engulfs us....
Episode 8: Chapter 7 Nuances - Unconditional Positive Regard
Episode 8: Chapter 7 Nuances - Personal Responsibility - Part 1
Episode 8: Chapter 7 Nuances - Personal Responsibility - Part 2
Personal responsibility is clearly holding yourself accountable for your own choices and your own actions. Jesus' claim specifically calls on you to take personal responsibility for making the choice, with your free will, to turn his claim into reality in your life. Do you know what else this means? Jesus is claiming that you, and only you, have the power to do this in your life, in addition to claiming that when you do, you are doing all you need to do to be the best human being you can be, on an individual and on a humanity level. Recognize this power in your life, recognize that you possess the power to make change in the world...
Episode 8: Chapter 7 Nuances - Conclusion
Langer and Rodin (1976) apply this concept and powerfully summarize all of the nuances: personhood, unconditional love, unconditional positive regard, and personal responsibility in their research with elderly in a nursing home. These individuals live in a virtually decision-free environment. In their experiment, those persons in the group who were seen in all these ways and given back responsibility for themselves, and were also given the responsibility of caring for a plant - thrived....

Episode 11: Chapter 10 Conclusion - Part 3
At the end of the day, as a pragmatic minimalist, I agree with Einstein (1919) regarding something bigger than ourselves, that the details are irrelevant, it is the thoughts that count. Yet, I am curious what you, as a psychotherapist, would make of encountering this person Jesus - knowing nothing of him prior. I imagine this person showing up - knowing only what he speaks. He agrees to a horse ride so we climb on horses to go for a ride along the river. He starts to talk while I listen....

Episode 4: Chapter 3 - Case Study - Part 3
My grandmother, who lived to be 99, passing 3 days before her 100th birthday, always said, "The proof is in the pudding." I never forgot this. Perhaps that is why I am a pragmatic minimalist. Solid theory is important, scientific research is important - but, in psychology, for me the results in application are what ultimately matters. Theory and research, after all, are only as good in therapy as the clients' lives they improve through application....

Episode 5: Chapter 4 Do, Feel, Then Perhaps, Talk - Part 3
Episode 7: Chapter 6 Pre-Therapy Assessment - Part 1
Episode 7: Chapter 6 Pre-Therapy Assessment - Part 2
Episode 8: Chapter 7 Mirror Experiential Therapy: Awe - Part 1
Episode 8: Chapter 7 Mirror Experiential Therapy: Awe - Part 2

Episode 10: Chapter 9 Mirror Experiential Therapy: We - Part 4
